ARWA Training Class

Grade I/II Water

This course is designed to assist individuals in obtaining their State of Alabama water and/or wastewater operator certifications. Individuals must attend 100% of each course for substitution of required experience credit purposes for operator certification. It is the responsibility of each individual attending an ARWA Water or Wastewater Operator Certification Exam Preparatory Training Course to comply with the ADEM Division 10 Regulations as they apply for certification examination and operator certification requirements.

Distribution System Overview – Part 1

Covers the fundamentals of water distribution systems, including piping networks, storage facilities, and service connections. Students will gain an understanding of how water is delivered to communities and the key components that ensure reliable service.

Distribution System Overview – Part 2

Builds on Part 1 with a deeper focus on pumps, valves, hydrants, meters, and system maintenance. Topics include pressure zones, water quality in the distribution system, and common challenges operators face in maintaining infrastructure.

 

11/03/2025

Wells

Introduces groundwater sources, well construction, and operation. Students will explore aquifers, pumping equipment, source protection, and regulations related to well water supply.

Basic Mathematics

Covers the essential math skills needed for operators, including unit conversions, flow calculations, dosage, and basic problem-solving. This session prepares students for practical calculations used daily in water operations.

Treatment Plants

An overview of conventional and alternative water treatment processes, including coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. Students will learn how plants transform raw water into safe, potable water.

Disinfection

Focuses on the use of chlorine and other disinfectants to ensure safe drinking water. Students will learn dosage calculations, CT concepts, residual monitoring, and the balance between safety and regulatory compliance.

 

11/12/2025

Safety

Emphasizes the importance of personal and workplace safety in water operations. Topics include chemical handling, confined space entry, PPE, electrical safety, and emergency response procedures.

 

11/17/2025

Laboratory

Covers basic laboratory practices and tests performed in water treatment and distribution. Students will learn sampling techniques, common water quality parameters, and the significance of monitoring results.

 

11/19/2025

Management / Advanced Mathematics

Prepares students for supervisory and higher-level operator responsibilities. This session introduces management principles, recordkeeping, regulatory compliance, and more complex math problems to strengthen problem-solving skills for certification exams.
